Session 3:Multimodal synergies in ocean studiesConveners Antonio Turiel, Institut de Ciencies del Mar, Barcelona, Spain Ronan Fablet, Telecom Bretagne, Brest, France Swen Jullien, Ifremer, Brest, France Scope (about 250 words) During the last decade, the ocean community witnessed worldwide the launch of over 30 new ocean-related satellite missions. Plans for new satellites, to improve the spatial-temporal sampling, are already laid well into the foreseeable future, and today, we are already talking Petabytes of data to download, analyze, transform into accessible information. Increasing computer power and understandings of relevant physical processes are also rapidly evolving, and contribute to advances in model accuracy and resolution refinement. The different satellite sensors can only be combined to provide the required high spatio-temporal sampling using physically or statistically based merging approaches. This session will aim at gathering researchers to explore multimodal synergies in ocean studies both from methodological and thematic viewpoints. Potential, non-exclusive synergies of interest include: • Synergies between different models of a given system (e.g., from simplified/asymptotical models to Direct Numerical Simulation) • Synergies between different sensors for a given geophysical tracer: e.g. microwave/Infrared-derived Sea Surface Temperature at different space-time resolutions • Synergies between different geophysical tracers: e.g., temperature, sea surface height, Ocean Colour, sea surface salinity,... • Synergies between different data sources: observation & numerical simulations, calibration & validation datasets, in situ & remote sensing, Lagrangian & Eulerian, assimilation models,.... |
